The excerpt below is taken from  “Two Weeks on Mississippi River Time,” The New York Times Magazine: The Sophisticated Traveler,” May 14, 1995

“We were not in the pioneer farmscape of the 19th century but farther back, in the terrain of the French and Indian hunters and voyageurs of the 17th Century. And to experience this sensation, we discovered, you had to be on the river. We had taken the same trip many times by car, on the Minnesota side and on the Wisconsin side, but had never felt this way–and had never seen these views, the theatrical palisades obscuring with a tease, and then revealing a panorama of interlocked channels and inlets, even grander bluffs plunging into the river as the boat rounded an island curve.
